Designing Better Business and Me, blog by Andy Brown

Designing Better Business and Me, blog by Andy Brown

Three years, over 300 grants given out, and over 500 businesses assisted. From Berwick upon Tweed in the North and Barnard Castle in the South West of the region and pretty much everywhere in between Designing Better Business has taken me to businesses of all sizes and descriptions, big, and small, traditional sectors like manufacturing to cutting-edge hi-tech solutions.

One thing I have learned from working on this project is that we still have amazing business people doing amazing things across the world. You can read about a small selection of businesses we have helped here.

One of my favorites was Starscape Limited based in Spittal near Berwick they make ceilings with fiber optic lights in that look like you are looking at the stars. These are sent around the world to exclusive hotels and private clients. I loved their product, but I loved where they worked even more.

Set in old farm outbuildings they had bird feeders and ponds all around them, they had swallows nesting in one of their buildings and had removed a couple of bricks so that the birds would have access in and out of the building when they had locked up and gone home. They told me that they often have deer wandering through their yard. An amazing place to work for a number of reasons!

As mentioned previously this programme has taken me all over the North East and I’m really proud that I have met a number of  businesses that had never engaged with business support organisations before and it was brilliant to think that due to their interaction with RTC North that they would potentially grow their business quicker than if they had not met us or had found expertise to develop new products and services that without our help maybe wouldn’t have made the move.
